Editorial Reviews:

Product Description
Connect any IDE or Serial ATA (SATA)/SATA II 3.5" Hard Drive to your computer through a USB port or eSata. The eSATA interface allows users to read and write large files up to 3Gbits per second, and it is fully backward compatible to SATA specification. This product is ideal for a personal backup solution. It is constructed from durable aluminum, to ensure heat dissipation. Transfer data quickly and easily, anywhere, with this great external hard drive case. This enclosure follows the SATA specification standard, which is the best and fastest throughput for better data-storage performance on the market.

5 out of 5 stars No Problems   December 27, 2009

Instructions are not necessary. Just plug-and-play. I tried it on several drives (ATA and SATA) with no problems. I haven't even closed the case I just keep switching between old drives and downloading files.

Excellent to test drives. I don't have to bother my computer's insides in order to test a drive. Just insert the drive, turn on the case and presto the windows explorer pops up and reveals what's inside the drive. It even recognizes partitions. I have a drive that is partitioned and the explorer recognizes it as two drives (ie. drive f: and g:).

Transfers are pretty fast as well.

Note: If the drive is faulty it is not this cases fault. It's not going to repair a faulty drive. Just blame the drive.

I don't know what kind of of SATA drives the other reviewer had but I have had no problems fitting any drive in this case.

5 out of 5 stars Big fan, good airflow, tight fit, sturdy   February 4, 2010

UPDATE: I found how to use the 4 screws to secure the drive (see below).

I bought this enclosure because I needed one with a cooling fan. At this time I use it with an Hitachi Deskstar 400 GB but I may have to use with a 1 TB drive which would give off more heat.

The enclosure is sturdy. The installation of the drive required a bit of patience but was not difficult. The enclosure comes with the IDE connectors pre-installed. You have to remove the power connector and the data connector and replace them with the SATA connectors (2 of them).

As other have said the drive fits very tightly and, yes, the back of the SATA connectors make the assembly slightly longer than the apparent available space in the enclosure What this means is that you can't just drop the drive straight in the enclosure; instead you have to insert the back of the drive (where the connectors are) first then the front will fit. I found it really easier to do this when both top and bottom cover plates are removed. The enclosure's fan is on the side of the drive unit's external circuitry.

Once the drive is in there you can secure it by removing the enclosure's side plastic covers (one screw each near the enclosure's connectors) and using the four provide screws where the drive unit's screw holes show. The air flow is quite good thanks to the size of the fan. The fan is silent.

I had no problem for getting the drive recognized by Windows Vista and the blue (power) and orange (activity) LEDs appear to work as advertised. The instructions booklet is worthless...

5 out of 5 stars Great enclosure!   March 3, 2010

Bought this enclosure to retrieve info on a IDE Hard Drive and to use with a Western Digital 500gb SATA blue drive.

I downloaded my files from a 1997 hard drive with no problem. I didn't install the drive. I just hooked up the supplied cables and downloaded the info off of the 3.2 gig IBM drive (Top of the line in 97).

The WD fit snug and I had no problem installing it into the enclosure. Not sure why other reviewers were having problems. It is a perfect fit.

My drive is on 24/7. I use it to record HD Video. The fan is silent, and the case is cool to the touch.

I would highly recomend this Sabrent Case.

5 out of 5 stars Satisfying IT purchase   March 22, 2010

This is one of the most satisfying IT purchases I've made in quite some time. I'll put my summary first - Great price/features, and everything about this product feels like quality.

I put a Western Digital Caviar Black into the enclosure and had only one issue with the fit. After removal of the cover on the other side of the enclosure, I discovered that the power wires were squeezed between the drive and a metal tab. It was easy to reposition the wires to the other side of the tab.

At this price, I couldn't find another enclosure with a cooling fan, and the Sabrent enclosure's fan does a very good job. The enclosure gets only lukewarm, even after hours of operation. Compared to the three other enclosures I've used without cooling fans, the temperature difference is dramatic. The fan isn't silent, but reasonably quiet, comparable to the sound level of a laptop fan at its lowest speed.

At this point I can't vouch for the eSATA functionality, as I don't have the capability to utilize it. For now, the USB connection is working just fine. Nice also knowing that in a pinch, I can connect an older PATA/IDE drive, although I haven't put it to the test.

A few other points: The enclosure is almost completely metal and feels solid. It's a little on the bulky side, so don't plan on tucking it into a tight briefcase. The tiny covers for the separate (blue) power and (red) busy lights are flush with the front casing, making them less prone to damage.

The power supply is an in-line (non-wall-wart) model with a grounded, detachable three-prong cord/plug on the mains side. The cord that connects to the enclosure is 2 1/2 feet long and has a 6-pin DIN plug. You'll need to take that 2-1/2-feet length into account if the enclosure will be placed on a high surface - otherwise, the power supply will be dangling in mid-air, straining the power connection. An extension cord would solve the strain problem, allowing the power supply to sit on the same surface as the enclosure.

The instructions are simple and easy to understand, with plenty of pictures. Instructions include how to format a drive from Windows.

Again, everything about this product feels like quality.

5 out of 5 stars Rock solid   April 28, 2010

This drive enclosure is rock solid. The best way I can describe this enclosure is that it looks and feels like an armored tank for your hard drive. In addition to the solid look and feel, I really appreciate the hardwired on/off switch (as opposed to the ubiquitous soft switches) so I know the drive will always default back to "on" even after a power outage. This isn't always the case with those soft switches. I am also very happy that this enclosure is one of the few with an actual fan built-in. I keep my external drive on 24/7, and while the fanless enclosures may work fine in that kind of situation, I guess I'm a little old school about heat management - a spinning fan is required in my book. I have this thing hooked up by eSATA to Windows Server 2008 and it was 100% plug and play as expected. It's been two months going 24/7 and so far no problems to report. Quick pointer: My 3.5" Hitachi hard drive was a tight fit in this enclosure, yours probably will be too. You might think your drive won't fit, but it will. Just take some time to line everything up properly before you try to push the drive into the enclosure. This goes for the interface cables too. Overall, very happy with this enclosure and would recommend for users looking for a reliable and solid enclosure.
