5 out of 5 stars Some tips when using this devise.   December 11, 2009

The USB to SATA/IDE adapter is very useful when you need to transfer data on the fly. It is cheap, I paid less than $10 with S&H. AS other had mentioned, the adapter is for temporary use only. It is not made to be left connected permanently as an external device. The quality is good, but it could be better. Upon receiving the adapter I gave it a try and I was able to read from 4 different drives (80MB SATA, 250MB IDE, 10MB IDE, and 40MB IDE). Here are some tips when using the adapter, First)Connect the SATA/IDE adapter and power cable to the Hard drive. Second)Connect the power cord to the outlet. Let the drive spin 20-30 Seconds before connecting the USB cable to the PC. Third)Connect USB cable to PC. After connecting the USB cable be patient. Sometimes it took up to a minute for Windows Vista to let me know that a new USB devise was found. I had problem with the second Drive I tried because I think I did the connections too fast. I retried a second time and it worked fine.

This worked perfectly for me copying to both XP and OS 10.4.11 - first time, every time. Simple and easy.

5 out of 5 stars Can't believe how wonderful this is!   November 2, 2009

I am the first to admit I am no technical genius. I have had 5 different computers which have gone caput in the last decade. Of course I didn't want to spend God only knows how much money trying to retrieve my documents and (most importantly) my photos from the hard drives. So I have been schlepping these hard drives around just hoping one day I could get to the data within. I had no idea a product like this existed until I started surfing the internet.

This is so easy to use. Very plug and play! Not only did I find everything I was looking for, I was able to transfer it to my newest computer, wipe one of the drives, and use it as a back-up drive. EXCELLENT!! So nice not to have to deal with condescending "experts", lol.

We've recovered several hard drives with this so far (PC's that couldn't boot to Windows). The connections for every type of hard drive make this a necessity for anyone doing computer repair, or someone who has no other way to get their important data off of their corrupt PC. Backing up data is always the best option, but for those who learned this too late, this device will save you!

If you purchase, do know that no instructions for use come with it. Always hook the power up to the hard drive to be recovered first, let the drive run for a minute or so, then hook up to the USB of the "rescuer" computer.

It's a really complete and helpful set of tools if you're working with several internal hard drives and just 1 computer.
